Koca Qualifies For State Contest

by Jeremy Klein

March 17, 2008

Fillmore Central Middle School student, Beth Koca, has recently qualified for the Nebraska State Geography Bee Championships.  The contest will be held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and will take place on Friday, April 4th.

In order to qualify for the State competition, Beth had to clear two hurdles.  First, Beth had to win the school-level contest which took place in November.  Approximately 30 FCMS students took part in the school contest.  As the school winner, Beth was allowed to take the State Qualifying Exam.  Only the top 100 scorers on the State Qualifying Exam are eligible for the State competition.

The Geography Bee is sponsored by National Geographic and each State champion is invited to participate in the National Championships which will take place in Washington D.C. at the end of May.  The National competition is televised on the National Geographic Channel and is hosted by Alex Trebek.

This is the second year in a row that a Fillmore Central Middle School student has qualified for the State competition.  Congratulations Beth and best of luck!
